“All the Local News” took up three long columns in The Millinocket Journal on January 17, 1902. Each item varied in length from one seven-word sentence to several that had four or five sentences all using a very small letter size and font. A magnifying glass should be in reach when reading these old, old newspapers!
Chickenpox is all the go around town.
W.B Gray, Esq. was in Bangor the first of the week on a business trip.
Representative G.W. Stearns returned to his legislative duties in Augusta Tuesday.
Andrew Gallant expects to go to Boston in a few days and take a position on the elevated railroad.
The mill clerks appreciated Arthur Russell’s team the first of the week. They ride with him to and from the mill at noon.
Joseph Higgins has a four-room tenement to let with city water connected on Penobscot Avenue. For further information inquire at Higgins & Bach’s.
Miss Mayazie Hayes is employed at the Great Northern Hotel as a waitress.

The Pavilion has undergone considerable repairs lately. A new chimney has been built and consequently the building is comfortably heated throughout.
P.J. Feeney of Bangor, representing the Vacuum Oil Company, has been on our streets this week breathing the pure ozone that is wafted down from old Katahdin.
The Ladies’ Congregational Club had excellent success with their baked bean supper at McCaffrey Hall Tuesday evening. They took in $22.00. This was followed by a social time, games being the feature of the evening. The ladies expect to have another supper in two weeks.
Miss Ivy Butters has been suffering the effects of a bad cold. (There are many notices of illnesses in this Local News column…if you sneezed your name would probably make the news!)
Clifford Patterson has moved to the Russell cottage opposite the Mountain View.
Edward Crossan left Tuesday morning for Rumford Falls where he will be employed in the mill of the International Paper Company as back tender.
Wallace Thompson was injured in the filter room Saturday, by being struck in the side by a belt that came off. He will be at work again in a few days.
(These are just a small sample of the items includes in this local news column. It appears that everything was news back in 1902…or maybe it was 1903. This four-page paper has page 1 and page 3 dated Feb. 1902 and page 2 and 4 dated Feb. 1903!)
